Amol Palekar is an Indian actor turned director. He directs Hindi as well as Marathi movies.

Personal Life Amol Palekar was born on 24th November 1944, in Mumbai, into a Marathi speaking family. He is a student of the J.J. School of Art. He is married to Sandhya Gokhale, writer of movies like PAHELI (2005), QUEST (2006) and SAMAANTAR (2009).
Palekar is an agnostic. He prefers to live in Pune. He has exhibited his sketches, drawings and paintings in Mumbai. He also does social work.
Career Theater Career
Palekar started his stage career with Marathi experimental theater along with Satyadev Dubey. In 1972, he formed his own theater group called 'Aniket'. Palekar introduced Theater of the Absurd to Maharashtra. He also introduced in the round theater where the audience circles the stage area.
Film Career As an Actor
Amol Palekar started his film career with Marathi cinema. His first film was the Marathi film SHANTATA! COURT CHALU AAHE (1971). The film was directed by Satyadev Dubey and was based on Vijay Tendulkar's play of the same name. Vijay Tendulkar himself wrote the screenplay of the movie. This film marked the beginning of 'New Cinema' Movement in Marathi cinema.
In 1974, Palekar, acted in Basu Chatterjee's RAJNIGANDHA. The movie won both the Filmfare Award for Best Picture, Popular award and Critics award. Palekar's next movie was again with Basu Chatterjee called CHHOTI SI BAAT (1975). He was paired with Vidya Sinha, his co-star from RAJNIGANDHA. Amol Palekar, acted in many such films, directed by Basu Chatterjee and Hrishikesh Mukherjee. These films were considered as alternative cinema.
These include films like GOL MAAL (1979), NARAM GARAM (1981), SAFED JHOOTH (1979), CHITCHOR (1976), GHARAONDA (1977) and BAATON BAATON MEIN (1979). Amol Palekar acted brilliantly in all these films. He was a natural when it came to essaying a role of a common man struggling to get a job, a flat or a wife/girlfriend.
Other bollywood films he has acted in include APNE PARAYE (1980), BHUMIKA (1977), which won two National Film Awards and the Filmfare Award for Best Film, DAMAAD (1978), DO LADKE DONO KADKE (1979), opposite Moushumi Chatterjee, MERI BIWI KI SHAADI (1979), SHRIMAN SHRIMATI (1982), RANG BIRANGI (1983), opposite Parveen Babi, TARANG (1984), AADMI AUR AURAT (1984), KHAMOSH (1985), also starring Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi, JHOOTHI (1985), opposite Rekha, BAAT BAN JAYE (1986) and TEESRA KAUN? (1994).
Amol Palekar also acted in a Malayalam movie OLANGAL (1982). Palekar's performance in Olangal was well - appreciated. OLANGAL was remade in Bollywood as MASOOM (1983).
His last Hindi movie as an actor was Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's AKS in 2001.
As Film Director
Marathi films

In 1981, Amol Palekar directed his first movie, in Marathi, AAKREIT (UNIMAGINABLE). Since then he has directed more than ten movies.
In 1995, Amol Palekar made BANGARWADI (THE VILLAGE HAD NO WALLS), based on the book Bangarwadi, by Vyankatesh Madgulkar. The film won the Filmfare award for Best Marathi film. Amol Palekar won the Filmfare Award for Best Director (Marathi Cinema) in 1997. BANGARWADI also won the National Award for Best Feature Film in Marathi.
In 2000, Amol Palekar directed KAIREE (THE RAW MANGO). His next film DHYAS PARVA (2001), won the National Award for Best Film on family welfare.
In 2003, he made ANAHAT (FOREVER), starring Sonali Bendre, Anant Nag and Deepti Naval.It was inspired from Surendra Verma's Hindi play 'Surya ki Antim Kiran Se Surya Ki Pehli Kiran Tak'.
In 2009, Palekar starred in and directed a Marathi movie called SAMAANTAR.
Hindi films
In 1985, he directed ANKAHEE, starring himself, Vinod Mehra, Deepti Naval, Shreeram Lagoo, Devika Mukherjee and Dina Pathak. In 1990, he directed a film called THODASA ROOMANI HO JAAYEN, starring Anita Kanwar, Nana Patekar and Vikram Gokhale. In 1997, he directed DAAYRA, starring Nirmal Pandey and Sonali Kulkarni.
He made PAHELI in 2005, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukherjee. The film was screened at the Sundance film Festival and Palm Springs International Film Festival. Paheli did not perform well at the box office. Even the critics did not support the movie. However, it was nominated as India's official entry to the 79th Academy Awards /Oscars.
English films
In 2006, Palekar directed QUEST, an English language film directed by Palekar won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in English Language.
His latest movie as a director was the English language film, AND ONCE AGAIN (2010), starring Antara Mali and Rituparna Sengupta.
TV Serials
Hindi
Amol Palekar has directed two TV serials 'Kachchi Dhoop' (1987) which starred Bharati Achrekar, Bhagayshree, Ashutosh Gowariker, and Shyamali Palekar. His next TV serial was 'Naqab' (1988). He directed 'Kareena Kareena', in 2004.
Marathi Amol Palekar has directed two Marathi TV serials, 'Paoolkhuna' (1993), and 'Mrignayanee' (1991).
Documentary
In 1989, Amol Palekar directed a documentary film called FITNESS FOR FUN, FITNESS FOR EVERYONE.
